Project Background

October 1999
ASI President facilitated a one-day student empowerment session and identified student’s recreational needs

December 1999
TSU Board approved a motion to hire Brailsford & Dunlavey to conduct a student recreation feasibility study.

March 2000
Brailsford & Dunlavey submitted feasibility study. Results indicated a strong study interest in building a student recreation center on the CSUF campus.

March 2000
TSU Board, ASI Board, and Student Fee Advisory Committee approved a student fee referendum to support the building of a student recreation center.

April 2000
Informational campaign was conducted.

May 2000
Referendum passed 1,103 to 486 votes (69% = yes, 31% = no).

May 2000
Recommendation to President’s Advisory Board was approved.

April 2001 – December 2001
Planning Committee Activities

  • Developed preliminary project timeline
  • Conducted campus recreation center site visits
    • University of California, Irvine
    • University of California, San Diego
    • University of California, Riverside
    • San Diego State University
    • University of Texas at Austin (2 facilities)
    • Texas A & M University
    • Baylor University
  • Debriefed each visit, collected notes, and synthesized committee member input
  • Conducted group exercise to develop guiding design principles
  • Conducted group exercise to prioritize spaces included in program plan
  • Developed program plan
  • Program plan endorsed by TSU Board, ASI Board, President’s Advisory Board

April 2002 – July 2002
Architect Selection Committee

  • Researched and interviewed six architectural firms
  • Recommended Langdon Wilson to be awarded 90-day Pre-design phase
  • TSU Board and ASI Board approved recommendation

October 2002 – February 26, 2004
Building Committee

  • Tested program planning assumption
  • Verified program, site and square footage
  • Verified budget projections
  • Developed and tested conceptual designs

Spring 2004
Schematic Design Approval

  • Received approval by ASI Board of Directors and TSU Governing Board

January 2005
Construction Management Firm Selection

  • Researched and interviewed management firms
  • Recommended CW Driver as the construction management firm
  • TSU Governing Board and ASI Board of Directors approved recommendation

Spring 2005
President's Advisory Board

  • Presented the Student Recreation Center Project to the President's Advisory Board
  • Received approval to move forward with project
