PROJECT UPDATES

UPDATE: APRIL 2016

FURNITURE SELECTION FOR EXPANSION AND CONNECTING AREAS

In collaboration with the expansion architect Steinberg, development of a furniture and design package for the expansion and connecting areas of the existing TSU have begun. New furniture will be installed in the expansion and many connecting areas of the existing TSU to give the building one feel. The furniture will be predominantly lounge and table seating throughout for students to use for relaxing, socializing, meeting for project, eating, and studying. A furniture demonstration will be coming in early May.

EAST PATIO PLAZA

The construction fence line on the east side of the project near TitanShops and Titan Walk has recently been expanded as work begins on the new east patio plaza area. This new patio plaza will become an open outdoor seating area and will encourage pedestrian traffic to approach the TSU from the full east side in order to encourage a welcoming and open space and to lessen congestion on the walkway near the ATMs.

UPDATE: MARCH 2016

CONCRETE POURED ON ALL THREE LEVELS

The TSU Expansion Project has been moving along at full speed over the past few weeks. There was a large crane to deliver the last of the structural steel to the roof of the existing building and the concrete floors have been poured on all three levels. In the future, the concrete on the main and lower levels will be polished to a beautiful shine.

ALTERNATE INFO & SERVICES LOCATION INCREASED LOUNGE SPACE

An alternate location for the new Information and Services department has allowed for the addition of another lounge area in the expansion. Originally planned for the center of the west side of the expansion’s main level, the location has been pushed north toward the existing building. The new Information and Services department will still be centrally placed as the welcome desk for the building, but in this location the west side of the main level has been opened up to now include another substantial lounge area for students.

METAL FRAMING BEGINS TO SHOW EXPANSION'S DETAIL

The construction team has continued to make progress in leaps and bounds as steel framing has begun to go up throughout the expansion. The framing begins to outline in much greater detail the true shape of the new space. The corners between the second floor pop out windows are now clearly visible and the construction crew has been prepping to plaster the exterior soffits.

UPDATE: FEBRUARY 2016

NEW STARBUCKS LOCATION PLANNED FOR TSU EXPANSION

In partnership with CSUF Auxiliary Services Corporation (ASC), plans have begun developing to add a new full service Starbucks coffee location to the TSU Expansion lower level. Discussions began in December and with the partnership of ASC, ASI, the PCL/Steinberg team, and Starbucks Coffee, the idea has quickly gained momentum. The new Starbucks location is planned to be installed in the lower level of the expansion, just adjacent to the lounge seating area at the foot of the grand stair.

TSU BREEZEWAY CLOSES

As part of preparations to join the new TSU expansion and the existing building, the TSU Breezeway outside of the food court has been closed for the remainder of the semester. Traffic into the food court or for the Yum convenience store is being directed to the other entrances on the east side of the building or through the food court entrances from the TSU courtyard. There is a new Yum entrance in the food court next to the Juice It Up location. The main lobby is still open for access to the Titan Pride Center and the elevator and stairs to the upper and lower levels, but must be entered from the courtyard or Alumni Lounge hallway.

WALKWAY CLOSURE NEAR TSU ATM'S

Due to necessary work on the roof of the expansion that over hangs the area near the TSU ATMs, the walkway at that corner will be closed every so often during the semester. These closures are necessary in order to ensure the safety of our students and campus community and will only be temporary and intermittent. When these closures occur, the main walkway will be blocked off on both sides near the temporary stairs. Coming from Titan Walk, there will still be access to the ATMs, but anyone wanting to get to the Food Court or into the TSU will need to travel the long way around the book store. Anyone leaving the TSU towards the heart of campus will also need to travel the long way around the bookstore.

UPDATE: JANUARY 2016

STRUCTURAL STEEL FRAMING IS GOING UP

During the first weeks of the New Year, the construction team has been making some big and noticeable progress on the TSU Expansion. Delivery and placement of the new expansion’s steel frame has started and you can now begin to see the outline of the new building. The construction crew will continue to finish all of the steel framing over the next few weeks and also prepare for and pour the concrete slabs for each of the three floors.

TSU INFORMATION & SERVICES DEPARTMENT RELOCATION

TSU Information & Services has moved out of the main lobby in anticipation of future construction impacts to that area. The department has relocated to what was formerly the quiet study lounge on the main level, adjacent to the Alumni Lounge. Some lounge seating in this area is still available, although it is no longer designated as a ‘quiet’ study space, and the relocation will have no impact on any services offered by the department. If you need to contact TSU Information and Services, please call 657-278-2468.

UPDATE: DECEMBER 2015

END OF FALL SEMESTER

As the semester comes to an end and the campus prepares for closure, the construction team is still hard at work making much progress on the TSU Expansion. Installation of concrete walls that outline the new lower level has begun and the construction crew will continue to pour concrete footings through the New Year. After that, just as we all return to campus in early January, structural steel will be delivered and will begin to go up. January and February should be the months where we really see a lot of action as the building takes shape.

UPDATE: NOVEMBER 2015

MASS EXCAVATION OF NEW LOWER LEVEL

The TSU Expansion Project continues to progress and has some exciting milestones on the near horizon. The construction team is currently underway with the mass excavation of the new lower level areas and should be completing this major phase of the project by the end of the month. Following excavation completion, foundation footing cement will be poured and the new building footprint will really start to appear! Following the excavation and foundation footings, basement walls will start to go up, which will soon be followed by structural steel framing.

CONSTRUCTION PARKING NEAR TUFFY LAWN

A small construction parking area will go up on the grassy knoll that is next to the Titan Shops loading dock just to the south of Tuffy Lawn. This is a temporary solution to the larger parking needs of the crew as work continues and increases and is also part of our effort to minimize the impact the expansion project has on existing campus facilities and services. By finding other parking alternatives, the Tuffy Lawn space is able to remain open and usable for student activities and events throughout the completion of the project.

UPDATE: OCTOBER 2015

TSU BREEZEWAY STAIRWELL CLOSES

The TSU Breezeway stairwell outside of the food court and main lobby has been closed. As part of the expansion project, the stairwell will be demolished to make way for the primary connecting point of between the new and existing buildings. Throughout the remainder of the project, the stairwell in the TSU main lobby will become the primary access point to the upper and lower levels.

UPDATE: SEPTEMBER 2015

CEREMONIAL GROUNDBREAKING

A ceremonial groundbreaking is set for September 16th in the Becker Amphitheatre. The event will feature remarks from CSUF President Mildred Garcia, Vice President for Student Affairs Berenecea Eanes, ASI President Michael Badal, Titan Student Centers Governing Board Chair Kristyn Grime, and of course, a ceremonial shovel turn!

TEMPORARY WATER SHUT OFFS

Water lines providing water to the TSU and neighboring buildings will be temporarily shut off as part of a water line relocation necessary for the expansion project. Following these shut offs, temporary hoses will be running above ground near some of these buildings to provide water. These hoses will only be in place temporarily until work on the water line is complete.

UPDATE: AUGUST 2015

INSTALLATION OF TEMPORARY EMERGENCY STAIRWELL

Part of the TSU Expansion project requires the installation of a temporary emergency only bridge/stairwell from the east side of the TSU 2nd floor (just above where “The Cup” coffee shop is). The bridge/stairwell will be enclosed with emergency alarm doors on both ends. These stairs would only be used in the event of an actual emergency evacuation of the TSU. The ‘bridge’ will extend over the walkway that runs along the building outside of the food court and connect to the stairwell that will sit next to the ATMs. In effect, the walkway outside of the food court will pass under this ‘bridge’ for the remainder of the project (approximately through February 2017). Work for the installation will occur only at night and the walkway outside of the food court will remain open and unobstructed during the day when traffic volume is highest. At night when work is being done, the walkway will be closed and signage will be posted.

UPDATE: JULY 2015

CONSTRUCTION FENCING NOW UP

The project site perimeter has now been established on the southeast section of the student union. Efforts to-date have primarily been mobilization, staging and set up - demolition activities are expected to begin very soon. With the site now established and active, it is very important that all members of the campus community stay out of the defined project site. This area is under the oversight and control of the general contractor, and to assist them in the maintaining the safety needed in an active construction area – we only should enter these areas when invited to do so by the contractors.

OUTDOOR FURNITURE RELOCATED

Ten of the fixed table sets and trash cans formerly in the TSU Patio have been relocated to the Jacaranda Court area (between the Bookstore and the Library), creating an alternative outdoor seating space for students while the East Patio is re-imagined as part of the project.

SOLSTICE II RELOCATED

This large aluminum sculpture was relocated from the south side of the union to the triangular planter immediately north of the TSU.

GROUNDBREAKING EVENT COMING SOON

Plans for a ceremonial ground breaking event for the project are currently being planned. ). Once a date and time have been finalized an announcement will be sent out.

UPDATE: MAY 2015

CONSTRUCTION FENCING GOING UP SOON

Construction fencing for the project is expected to begin being installed on the south and south east areas of the student union – starting the week of June 22nd. Once this fence is in place, project staging and pre-demo efforts will begin. As part of this phase of work the fixed outdoor seating now on the TSU’s east and south facing patios will be relocated to the shade covered area between the bookstore and the library so students continue to have outdoor seating options during construction.

GARDEN CAFE DEMOLITION TAKING PLACE SOON

The Garden Café building will be demolished this summer to make way for the expansion and a more seamless transition between the lower level of the student union and an improved sunken courtyard space. Salvage of re-usable equipment and other materials is taking place within the building currently.
