Summary

Under the direction of the Executive Director, Associated Students Inc. (ASI), the Assistant Executive Director, Wellness and Recreation provides visionary and strategic leadership for a holistic, multidisciplinary approach to student wellness and recreation including administrative support and leadership for the Student Recreation Center (SRC), comprehensive campus recreation programs, the Student Wellness Center, holistic wellness initiatives aligned with the 8 Dimensions of Wellness, and the ASI Centralized Basic Needs Center and Food Pantry.

 

The AED is responsible for planning, implementing, and assessing wellness and recreation strategies, policies, programs, and services that address the needs of the student community; serves a critical role in student advocacy, leadership development, strategic planning, and campus culture; advances and revises as appropriate, the Wellness & Recreation learning outcomes; and advances a unified and sustainable model of well-being that integrates recreation, wellness, and basic needs to support student success and campus vitality.

 

The AED collaborates in the planning and development of a future ASI Wellness Facility and related improvements to the SRC, and the ASI Centralized Basic Needs Center and Food Pantry as part of the ASI Student Wellness Initiative (ASWI), ensuring programs and spaces are safe, inclusive, financially sound, and aligned with ASI and university priorities.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide executive leadership for the development, integration, and long-term sustainability of ASI’s wellness and recreation portfolio
  • Provide executive level strategic vision and oversight for the operations of the Student Recreation Center and associated recreation programs, Student Wellness Center and associated wellness programs, and the ASI Centralized Basic Needs Center and associated programs.
  • Collaborate on strategic planning and development of future ASI wellness and recreation facilities, including feasibility analysis, capital planning, stakeholder engagement, and coordination with related university and commercial organizations.
  • Lead development and integration of wellness initiatives in alignment with the 8 Dimensions of Wellness.
  • Oversee financial and administrative performance of the wellness & recreation portfolio; responsible for the preparation of the portfolio’s annual budget submission and ensuring resource allocation aligns with ASI strategic direction.
  • Collaborate with campus partners including Student Health Center, CAPS, Basic Needs Services, Academic Affairs, Dining Services, Auxiliary Services Corporation, Human Resources & Inclusive Excellence, and related Student Affairs and Strategic Enrollment Management departments.
  • Oversee long-range facility planning, capital improvements, and financial sustainability.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, risk management, and industry best practices (e.g., AORMA, NIRSA, ACHA, CAS).
  • Utilize assessment practices and data for continuous quality improvement of facilities and programs.
  • Develop and sustain collaborative partnerships with local and regional community partners, other divisions, departments, academic units, administrative leaders, faculty, and students to enhance wellbeing on campus.
  • Create and implement a comprehensive assessment agenda for recreation & wellness services. Specify key performance indicators and desired student outcomes. Utilize assessment data and student feedback to guide program & facility development and service improvement.
  • In collaboration with ASI leadership and CSUF University Advancement, research and develop appropriate grant funding strategies for campus-wide wellness and recreation programming ensuring compliant administration and reporting.
  • Propose recommendations and solutions to issues and problems directed to Associated Students Inc., CSUF being sensitive to stakeholder considerations and viability of courses of action.

 

Supervises a Director-level employee who in turn:

  • Is responsible for the operation of the Student Recreation Center and the management of a comprehensive campus recreation program, including, among other duties:
  • Ensuring proper facility scheduling and operation of the Student Recreation Center, intramural fields, and SRC pool.
  • Delivery of a comprehensive campus recreation program by leading the planning, organization, coordination, implementation and evaluation of campus recreation programs.
  • Providing leadership and direction for Intramurals, Titan Youth Sports Camp, Aquatics and Learn-to-Swim, membership and outreach, Outdoor Adventures and the climbing wall, and Fitness and Wellness programs.
  • Developing policies and procedures for all operations in the recreation program and facilities.
  • Ensuring the development, coordination, and implementation of a comprehensive marketing plan.
  • Responsibility for the effective development and management of the Titan Recreation annual budget.
  • Maintaining effective Safety/Risk plans, maintenance schedules, and appearance standards.

 

Supervises a Director-level employee who in turn:

  • Manages the to-be-built Centralized Basic Needs Center, including facility oversight, scheduling, and reservations, as well as supervision of staff and day-to-day operations.
    Oversees a comprehensive food pantry program, facility, and staff.
  • Maintains, manages and coordinates outreach relations with community partners. Develops and implements an outreach plan to promote the ASI Food Pantry and engage campus and community interest.
  • Collaborates with the ASI Marketing, Design and Communications departments to maintain the ASI Food Pantry website and other marketing and communications related to The Pantry.
  • Coordinates, schedules and facilitates educational workshops regarding food preparation, healthy eating, etc. for CSUF students. Provides innovative, intentional programs and initiatives that actively engage the campus community in issues related but not limited to food insecurity, sustainability, and basic needs.
  • Manages operational policy development and review, project proposal development, assessment and food inventory tracking.
  • Assists with researching public and private grant agencies and CSUF University Advancement to identify potential sources of funding. Assists with writing, editing, and proofreading grant proposals.
  • Oversees the Food Pantry budget and related grants. Assists with the preparation of annual budget requests.
  • Assists in fundraising and development for the pantry, including coordination of food drive donations, and project drives both on and off campus.

 

Supervises a Director-level employee who in turn:

  • Addresses student needs by overseeing a comprehensive ASI wellness program, including operating a to-be-built ASI Wellness Center.
  • Evaluates and implements comprehensive wellness programs that address the 8 Dimensions of Wellness.
  • Designs and executes targeted wellness initiatives to address the specific needs of diverse student populations, faculty, and staff.
  • Develops and implements strategic wellness plans aligned with ASI’s mission and goals, and the university’s overall strategic plan.
  • Collaborates with university departments to integrate ASI wellness initiatives.
    Develops and disseminates wellness-related educational materials through various channels (e.g. website, social media, workshops, presentations), specifically promoting ASI wellness programs.
  • Collects and analyzes data to track wellness program outcomes and metrics, specifically for ASI programs.
  • Develops and implements wellness-related policies and procedures.

This role has the authority to perform or effectively recommend the following functions for the employees listed above:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or equivalent and five to seven years progressive experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in facilities management and contract negotiations required.
  • Must have three years of responsible supervisory experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate in a related field.
  • Experience in California State University auxiliary system preferred.
  • Experience in higher education and complex facility oversight in the university setting preferred.
  • Five years of responsible supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in creating and implementing assessment practices.
  • Construction project management experience with projects involving complex architectural plans and coordination of multiple trades preferred.
  • Understanding of space and facilities design and management.
