My name is Joel Garibay, and I am a third-year communications major with an emphasis in advertising and a minor in marketing. As a first-generation Chicano, I am passionate about social justice, committed to advocating for students, and believe in providing resources to ensure all students succeed.
I hold multiple leadership roles on campus that have been instrumental in helping me develop as a student leader and understand the value of giving back to the campus community and advocating for students. Currently, I am on the ASI Board of Directors representing the College of Communications; I am one of the co-chairs of M.E.Ch.A. de CSUF, I am a Titan Ambassador on campus and a part of the Male Success Initiative (MSI) program, where I am a Scholar. MSI has taught me the importance of building a community with students and the need for campus resources to be available to students.
These leadership roles have allowed me to grow and discover new skills to run for ASI president. I have connected with the campus community, learned about student needs/concerns, and developed a better understanding of how to provide solutions.
Hello, my name is Joel Garibay. I am running to be your next ASI President. Within my roles on campus, I have gained further insight into how students feel about campus life and the importance of resources and opportunities offered, in my role with M.E.Ch.A. De CSUF, I was able to promote advocacy for student groups such as the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) when it came to the mismanagement and lack of concern from student outcry regarding the program. Through that advocacy work, I could see how disconnected student voices were from the administration. As ASI President, I plan to advocate for all student voices and concerns that arise on campus. Ensure that student groups and communities can access the resources and materials needed to succeed.
As a student leader on campus, I have seen and experienced the importance of community and its impact. In the communities I am a part of on campus, such as MSI and M.E.Ch.A. De CSUF, I’ve been blessed to have a support system and feel empowered by those around me. As fortunate as I have been in my experiences, plenty of students don’t have a support system here on campus. I want to bring a better line of communication between students and the opportunities out there. Acknowledge student needs and want to help grow the communities here on campus.
Regarding the communities here on campus, I want to ensure their needs are being met. Communities here on campus need proper funding for clubs and organizational events, which go a long way in ensuring that students feel valued. The country’s current political state has put much pressure on our underrepresented communities. My goal is to ensure the safety of our communities here on campus, especially those currently being targeted. I plan on working closely with our university leaders and police department to ensure the safety of our students and relieve the stress they may be facing. Additionally, my focus would be to provide additional services, funding services, or increasing scholarships.
Our campus has so many amazing ways to get involved and engaged. However, a low percentage of students still attend the events or participate. I want to shorten that participation gap by supporting our athletic and community events on campus, listening to what students want to see from campus events, and bringing those ideas to fruition, building a better campus life for all. With your help, these goals and initiatives can become a reality as we strive to strengthen our campus through community, advocacy, and engagement. Vote Joel for your ASI President for a stronger and better-connected CSUF.
