Hi everyone! I am Edwin Valdez. I’m a first-generation Guatemalan American and a Third-year Psychology major with a pre-health professions minor here at CSUF. I have served in several roles on campus, including being a Resident Advisor (RA) in CSUF Housing, the Latinx Student Psychological Association ICC Representative, and currently the LSPA President. Throughout my positions, advocacy has been an important factor in the success of each organization which I plan to carry into the role of Board of Directors. As president, I have learned the vital role student organizations play in building community on campus and creating environments for marginalized identities. During my time as LSPA’s HSS ICC representative, I learned the processes that go into ASI councils and believe I can bring a knowledgeable perspective to the board. My position in CSUF Housing entails advocating for student needs and creating community among peers in and out of housing. Outside of school, I volunteer at Providence St. Jude Hospital in Orange County. I also enjoy collecting vinyls, going to concerts, and small band shows!!
If elected to the Humanities and Social Sciences Board of Directors, I plan on advocating for initiatives and programming that create inclusive and education- driven environments for all our students. I want our student body to succeed in their goals and realize their full potential by highlighting our programs and connecting our students with the resources that are specifically targeted for them.
I plan on using my previous experience in the Latinx Student Psychological Association (LSPA) to support our HSS community through personalized experiences. During my time as President of LSPA, we emphasized promoting initiatives available to students such as scholarship opportunities, mentorships, and advising. We also highlighted organizations such as CAPS, Basic Needs, and Titan Health to ensure our members were fulfilled holistically. I plan to bring these practices and expand them to our entire college through workshops and informational sessions that focus on our student body’s various needs.
I am committed to personally meeting with our student organizations on campus and highlighting organizations that amplify the voices of our marginalized communities here at CSUF. I know that resources are always available and it is important that students are aware of this too. I believe a personal approach and connection will encourage students to apply and take full advantage of the resources available to them.
Additionally, as an HSS student, I know that many of us are planning to attend graduate school and are looking for resources to help us become competitive applicants. I plan on working with our HSS Success Center and faculty to help emphasize the importance of providing experience for our students. I think it is important that students have opportunities available where they can work with the communities they are a part of and can research topics related to their identities. I believe that hands-on experience and research not only make competitive applicants but are also an important part of growing and learning in your field.
Beyond academics and professional experience, a balance of wellness and enjoyment is necessary for each student to succeed. I plan on working with our college to create initiatives that prove students are more than their academics, and foster experiences that make students proud to be a Titan.
In conclusion, I hope to be a strong advocate for the students of Humanities and Social Sciences here at CSUF. I hope to serve with fellow board members and faculty to create an experience that suits students of all identities and backgrounds. By meeting each student’s needs, I will ensure we have a community all can thrive in. I appreciate your consideration and look forward to serving our student body.
