Joe Morales
Seeking Candidacy for: Board of Directors, College of Humanities and Social Science

Biography:

Throughout my time at Cal State Fullerton, I’ve fought to be a strong advocate and leader who puts students first. I’ve had the privilege of serving as ASI Board of Directors for HSS and Treasurer last year, and now currently serving as ASI President. Every step of the way, my priority has been making sure students feel heard, supported, and empowered. As President, I have prioritized putting students first by leading the ASI Student Wellness Initiative, fighting to increase student spaces, expand mental health services, and improve campus climate, especially for commuter students. I have advocated for expanded scholarships, ensuring that student fees go directly back to them, easing financial burdens and helping students earn their degrees. Beyond that, I worked closely with university officials to improve essential programs like EOP, ensuring students are heard and supported. Increasing student representation has been one of my proudest achievements, last fall I helped reach a full ASI Board for the first time in over a year and boosted student government applicants, ensuring more voices are represented on campus. I have always fought for real solutions, change, and student impact, and I will continue to do so for the College of HSS.

Statement/Platform:

Resolve Class Availability & Scheduling Conflicts:
One of the biggest obstacles the students of HSS face is class availability and being able to schedule classes. Many HSS students suffer from the lack of classes that work around students’ schedules, whether they be commuters, part-time, or full- time workers. There are not enough options for students to find classes at a convenient time, or the classes fill up too fast, leaving insufficient spaces for students to enroll in the courses necessary for graduation. I not only have experience working with faculty and administration as ASI President, but it is my mission to increase the number of sections for high-demand courses and push for more hybrid, online, and asynchronous options to give students flexibility. Additionally, I will advocate for more accessible advising, including group advising sessions and Degree Planning Days, where students can receive guidance on course mapping and stay on track to graduate.
Boost Networking & Internship Opportunities:
I want to ensure that all HSS students are ready for success once they graduate. That is why I will work to ensure that HSS students have access to stronger partnerships with alumni and local employers, as this is key to success. Many students in fields such as Psychology, Political Science, and others within the college will most likely pursue graduate school or professional careers, and I want to make sure they have career fairs and networking events specifically tailored to HSS students. This will help with access to research opportunities, internships, and jobs. I also want to give students more opportunities for internships and research positions by working with faculty to develop a list of professors actively seeking research assistants for students interested in hands-on academic experience. Additionally, I want to create a database for internships that current and alumni students have held, ensuring an accessible and valuable network of internships for future students.
Increase Student Engagement Through Leadership & Professional Development:
I want to ensure that all HSS students develop the leadership skills necessary to succeed both during their time at CSUF and beyond graduation. That is why I will work to create leadership training workshops in partnership with HSS clubs and organizations that focus on essential skills like teamwork, time management, communication, and ethical decision-making. These workshops will help students collaborate effectively with diverse perspectives, balance responsibilities, gain confidence in public speaking, and lead with integrity. Additionally, I want to establish a mentorship program that connects experienced student leaders with newer students interested in getting involved in ASI, campus organizations, or leadership roles. By fostering mentorship and leadership development, we can create a stronger, more engaged HSS community that ensures every student not only has the tools and support they need to thrive, but can help their peers do the same.
