Emely Espino Bardales
Seeking Candidacy for: Board of Directors, College of Health and Human Development

Biography:

Hi everyone! My name Emely Espino Bardales and I am currently a junior Child and Adolescent Studies major. I currently spend my time being an EOP mentor, intern at the children center here on campus and do research with my mentor from my department. As a first generation and low income student, I try to be involved on campus as much as I can. My main focus has been doing research for marginalized communities and have now focused on trying to better mental health resources for Latinx individuals. I am also a McNair scholar and a Health Professions Track of Sally Casanova scholarship recipient. Other than my scholarly activities, I enjoy spending my time in LA, where I am originally from and love spending time with friends, family and my cat.

Statement/Platform:

Some things I would like to work on for our college is creating more of a community and being able to voice the concerns of those who haven’t been heard. My work has focused on advocacy which is something that I would like to bring to my work at ASI. My main focus would be bringing our college together where we can host event but also have transparency with our students. Along with transparency, I want to be able to increase our resources to support the needs while also being culturally competent. Growing up with many cultures around me, I find it crucial to be able incorporate cultures into our interactions and for our support systems to understand how to respond in appropriate ways. With all of this in mind, I find it crucial to work with my peers, faculty and staff to be able to create the change that students need. Running for this position means being the voice for our community. Without our community, there wouldn’t be anything to voice for. The Health and Human development department has given me many opportunities to grow as a student and as a person. I want to give back to my peers and faculty who have been beside me through this academic journey. It is all about bettering our community and services to be able to provide a better supported pathway but also an interactive and fun journey.
