Jared Ortiz-Luis
Seeking Candidacy for: Board of Directors, College of Health and Human Development

Biography:

Hello, I’m Jared Ortiz-Luis, and I’m running to represent the extraordinary students in the College of Health and Human Development on the ASI Board of Directors. I’m a senior public health major with a concentration in global health and a psychology minor. I’ll be a graduate student this fall studying epidemiology at CSUF. I have been actively involved in my department as a research assistant since my sophomore year. I have also served as a supplemental instruction leader for the Department of Public Health and as a TA for the Psychology Department. In both roles, I have learned where the critical gaps in student resources exist, which has sparked my interest in running for a student leadership position to address them effectively. This past summer, I had the amazing opportunity to travel to Thailand and conduct air pollution research on PM2.5 and protective practices as part of the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Training Program funded by the NIH. My desire for social justice and health equity has driven my passion for public health research. I firmly believe that the research our college produces offers valuable insight into shaping policy that drives positive community health outcomes.

Statement/Platform:

If elected to represent the College of Health and Human Development on the ASI Board of Directors, I will work tirelessly to amplify students’ voices and advocate for their needs. I plan to implement semesterly needs assessments through surveys, gathering data to identify the specific challenges faced by students across our diverse college community. Having served as a Supplemental Instruction leader and a Teaching Assistant, I recognize that students often struggle with quantitative coursework, and I am committed to supporting policies that expand resources like supplemental instruction to help students succeed.

As an incoming graduate student with experience in research, I understand the importance of securing both intramural and extramural grants to fund student- driven projects and research initiatives. If elected, I will advocate for expanding access to these resources to help students build their careers and professional networks.

Given the global challenges we face—climate change, pandemics, and social inequality—collaboration is key. I propose the creation of an interdisciplinary research hub to foster collaboration between departments on both research and community initiatives, and serve as a communication platform for students and faculty committed to tackling these pressing issues together.

Above all, I am dedicated to improving access to resources and academic support, especially for students facing mental health and financial barriers. I will work to strengthen our diversity and inclusion efforts, ensuring that every student feels valued and supported. Together, we can create a supportive and inclusive environment where all students thrive, and I hope to play a role in making that vision a reality.
